GRAND THEATRE BORDEUAX - BORDEAUX, FR - APRIL 22, 2023

From its conception, the ballet was inspired by the music, Log by Bristish-Composer Graham Fitkin. The music was the starting point of departure which I used as a guide for the overall feeling of the ballet and also to build a movement vocabulary for the work.

SKYWATCHER draws inspiration from the Rains FW22 Collection "SKYWATCHER" for costumes and set design. The Danish brand, known for its minimal and contemporary design for rainwear, looks towards the sky using the Northern Lights as its inspiration for the collection. Rains describe the collection: "Skywatcher looks high. To the weather, it is engineered to fend off. And to the colors created by a Scandinavian phenomenon - the Northern Lights. Though universally recognized - a story retold - each sky-bound pixel is a rare one-off. As unique as the eyes that gaze from below". Ultimately, I hope to bring the Arctic Circle to the south of France on the ONB stage.

Initially, I planned to create a ballet centered around my inspiration, the Northern Lights, but it eventually developed into a tribute to my mother. SKYWATCHER tells the life story of my late mother, who died of breast cancer in 2017. The ballet does not follow a direct narrative flow of her life but shows her life's evolution. The ballet honors her life and many others who have come to know how terrible this disease is. My mother was the love of my life, the person that sparked my dream, and the sole reason I am a dancer today. SKYWATCHER is a celebration of life, and my incredible parents, who taught me to dream big and reach for the stars. SKYWATCHER is a testament that dreams do come true. The energy of the ballet is driven by the incredible vibrancy of my parents and the constant love they poured into me. Most importantly, I want the ballet to represent the incredible spirit and energy of the dancers of Opera National de Bordeaux.

SKYWATCHER was probably the most complicated ballet I've created in my career. It's a love letter; like any letter, you want to ensure it is understandable and sensitive to the emotion you want to convey. There was a lot of self-examining and unpacking of memories to understand what I wanted to say with this work. Creating the dance came fairly easy, but finding a deeper meaning for the work was challenging. Sometimes a work's intention is evident at its conception, but in the case of SKYWATCHER, it was slowly revealed to me through the creative process while working with the dancers.
