Solo 01: 3 Parts Ligeti was created for Marcelo Gomes, specifically for the Ballet Supreme Gala in August 2022. My intention for the work centered around using the music as his primary source of inspiration while showcasing the incredible artistry and technical ability of Marcelo Gomes. Set to György Ligeti's String Quartet No. 1 (Metamorphosis Nocturnes), the ballet features three sections from the string quartet, which I've combined to create a sort-of story arc for the work. However, the work follows no particular theme or narrative, similar to the composer's intention for his composition.
Metamorphosis refers to the composition's form as the string quartet can be listened to as one movement or a sequence of variations. "It is, rather, that one and the same musical concept appears in constantly new forms - that is why "metamorphoses" is more appropriate than "variations," said the Hungarian composer about the score. The 4 min solo is split into three parts but follows the same principle of "metamorphosis." The three sections have been configured to blend endlessly into one another, allowing for a constant build-up and progression throughout the work.
Ligeti's String Quartet No. 1 is dynamic, filled with varying rhythms and melodies, which has inspired the movement for the work. Classicism is at the forefront, with a slight twist.
The ballet also takes inspiration from the character Apollo, the young greek god of music and dance, from George Balanchine's 1928 ballet Apollo Musagète. Solo 01: 3 Parts Ligeti does not follow the narrative but instead uses the character of Apollo as a point of departure for the origin of creation and embodiment for the dancer. Ultimately, I hoped to create a modern-day Apollo that represents my choreographic voice and the fluidity of today's world.
